Marmot
Adolf And Dora Aschoff came to Marmot in 1883 and purchased 240 acres. He established a Post Office in 1886 and it operated until 1930. Adolf was the first Ranger in the Mt. Hood Forest. He was best known for his resort called “Aschoff’s Mountain Home”. The Aschoffs had nine children. Dora died in 1918. The resort deteriorated after that and the new Mt. Hood highway redirected traffic away from Marmot. Adolf sold the hotel to Percy Shelly in 1930 and moved to town, he died a short time later. On July 4th 1931 the hotel and cabins burned to the ground. The museum, post office and store on the south side of Marmot road were spared. Today all are gone.
The first Marmot school was built between 1878 and 1880. It was used until about 1900 when R.A. Ten Eyck deeded a site for a new school for one dollar and a new school was built.
